Which countries and territories grant Visa Waiver for Vietnamese passport holders?

According to the Henley Passport Index 2023, Vietnamese passports are ranked 82nd with 55 countries and territories that are exempt from visas or have simplified procedures such as obtaining visas at border gates and electronic visas.

Compared to the ranking in January of this year, the Vietnamese passport has increased by 6 places, from the 88th position and increased by 10 places compared to 2022.

However, the number of countries and territories that are exempt from visas for Vietnamese citizens is still 55.

Specifically, visa-free destinations for Vietnamese citizens include 

  • Southeast Asian countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste*.
  • Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives*, Nepal*, Sri Lanka**, Taiwan (China)**, Tajikistan*.
  • Middle East region: Iran*, Kuwait*, Oman.
  • Oceania: Cook Islands, Marshall Islands*, Puala Islands*, Micronesia, Niue, Samoa*, Tuvalu*.
  • Americas: Bolivia*, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Suriname.
  • Caribbean Region: Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, St. Lucia*, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
  • Africa: Burundi*, Cape Verde*, Comoro Islands*, Djibouti*, Guinea-Bissau*, Madagascar*, Malawi*, Mauritania*, Mauritius*, Mozambique*, Namibia*, Rwanda*, Seychelles*, Sierra Leone*, Somalia*, Tanzania*, Togo*, Zambia*.

In Southeast Asia, Singapore's passport is the most "powerful" in the world according to the Henley Passport Index 2023 when its citizens can visit 193 destinations (countries/territories) out of 227 destinations around the world without a visa. Over the past decade, Singaporeans have added 25 new visa-free destinations.

For five years in a row, Japan has held the number one position in the Henley Passport Index, a global measure of freedom of movement in terms of the level of visa-free travel enjoyed by citizens. However, by the summer of 5, Japan had dropped to third place.

The Henley Passport Index is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ranks 199 passports worldwide. The index is updated in real time throughout the year and as visa policy changes come into effect.
