The Requirement for a "Loose-Leaf" Visa for China

There are some issues with the map in Mainland Chinese passports, it is called the "9-dash line" map. Because of this, Vietnam does not put a stamp in these passports.

The way it works is that you apply for the E-Visa on the internet, like you normally do. But when you get to Vietnam, the immigration people will give you a piece of paper, which is your "loose-leaf" visa, and you have to keep it inside your passport.

It is very important that you bring two passport photos with you in case the people at the border need them to make a separate paper visa for the "loose-leaf" visa for China. You should always have these photos with you when you travel to Vietnam with a "leaf" visa, for China.

Hong Kong (SAR vs. BNO)

As for the Hong Kong SAR, passport holders follow the same process; you are fully eligible for the 90-day E-Visa. Nevertheless, BNO (British National Overseas) is required to apply for a Visa on Arrival with a validity of up to 30 days. Unlike Mainland Chinese passports, Hong Kong passports are stamped directly by the Vietnamese immigration.

Taiwan (ROC Passport)

Taiwanese citizens were previously restricted to "Visa on Arrival" with expensive approval letters. In 2026, the E-Visa is now the standard.

Ensure your "Passport Number" and "Personal ID Number" are entered correctly on the government portal, as any mismatch often leads to rejection.

The "Phu Quoc Loophole"

All three groups can enter Phu Quoc Island visa-free for 30 days, provided you:

1. Fly directly to Phu Quoc from a foreign country (e.g., Hong Kong to Phu Quoc).

2. Do not travel to mainland Vietnam (Hanoi, HCMC, etc.) without an E-Visa.
